SSW (Specified Skilled Worker) visa: Japanese level and how to prepare
SSW (i) lets foreign workers take jobs in fields facing labour shortages in Japan. Here is what the Japanese-language part involves.
Last checked: 16 October 2026
The two requirements
- Japanese: JLPT N4, or JFT-Basic at level A2.
- A skills test for your field of work.
Which fields?
There are 19 fields after a January 2026 Cabinet decision. An India–Japan cooperation memorandum from 2021 covers a set of fields including caregiving, construction, agriculture, food manufacturing and food service. Check the official lists before you plan.
JFT-Basic details
Computer-based, 60 minutes, scored 10–250; 200 or more shows A2. It is held many times a year and results do not expire. From August 2026 it also reports A1 and A2.1.
