Three exams are commonly used as proof of Japanese in India. Which one you need depends on what you want to do with it.

Last checked: 16 October 2026

JLPT (Japanese-Language Proficiency Test)

Five levels, N5 (beginner) to N1 (advanced). Held twice a year, in July and December. It tests vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening — not speaking or writing. It is the most widely recognised proof of Japanese for studies and jobs.

NAT-TEST

Five levels (5Q to 1Q) that roughly match N5 to N1. It is held several times a year in India, so it can suit you if you cannot wait for the July or December JLPT. Check the official site for current dates and centres.

JFT-Basic (Japan Foundation)

A computer-based test of everyday Japanese, 60 minutes, scored from 10 to 250 (200 or more shows level A2). It is held many times a year and results come quickly. It is used for the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) route, and from August 2026 it also reports levels A1 and A2.1.

Frequently asked questions

Which is easier, JLPT or JFT-Basic?

They test different things. JFT-Basic focuses on everyday Japanese and is shorter (60 minutes, computer-based). The JLPT has five levels and covers a wider range of reading and grammar at higher levels.

Is JFT-Basic enough for the SSW visa?

JFT-Basic at level A2 is one accepted way to show the Japanese needed for SSW (i); you must also pass the skills test for your field. JLPT N4 is the other accepted proof.

How often is the JLPT held in India?

Twice a year, in July and December, in several Indian cities. Registration is handled by each city's host institution, and seats fill fast.
