Competition for MEXT is intense, and most applicants from India and around the world apply with zero Japanese language ability — which limits them to the small number of English-taught programs everyone else is also fighting for. A candidate who can actually speak Japanese stands out immediately in the interview, and qualifies for the much larger pool of Japanese-taught programs almost nobody else can access. Japanese isn't optional here — it's the single biggest lever you control.

Step by step, from "I'm interested" to landing in Japan
MEXT scholarships run across several categories — Research Students (the most common route for Bachelor's graduates), Undergraduate, Japanese Studies, Specialized Training College, College of Technology, and Teacher Training. Each has its own age limit and academic requirements, generally aimed at younger applicants (commonly under 35 for research students, younger for undergraduate categories) with a strong academic record.
MEXT is one of the most competitive scholarships in the world for its category, with a limited number of seats per country each year. Genuinely fluent Japanese doesn't just help the interview — it opens up the majority of programs, which are taught in Japanese, instead of restricting you to the small number of English-taught tracks that every non-Japanese-speaking applicant worldwide is also competing for. An applicant who shows up to the embassy interview with real conversational Japanese stands out immediately against a pool where most candidates have none.
Most Indian applicants apply via the Embassy Recommendation route — through the Embassy of Japan in New Delhi or the Consulates in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, or Bengaluru. The alternative is University Recommendation, applying directly to a Japanese university with an existing MEXT partnership. The Embassy route is more common and is announced annually, typically with applications opening around April–May — always check the Embassy of Japan in India's official website for the exact current-year dates, since these shift slightly year to year.
Application form, academic transcripts and certificates, letters of recommendation, a research plan or field-of-study statement (for research students), a health certificate, passport-size photos, and passport copy. Universities/embassy staff can be picky about formatting — start early rather than rushing this in the last week.
Shortlisted candidates sit a written exam (subjects depend on category — often includes Japanese language, English, and specialization subjects) and an interview at the embassy/consulate. This is where visible Japanese ability, even at N4–N3, makes a genuine, visible difference against candidates who show up with none.
The embassy nominates successful candidates to MEXT, which then works to match you with a Japanese university willing to accept you. This step is out of your direct control, but a stronger academic + language profile improves your matching prospects.
Once matched and confirmed, you'll receive your Certificate of Eligibility and apply for your student visa, attend a pre-departure orientation, and receive your first stipend installment shortly after arrival in Japan. And even after you land the scholarship, the Japanese you built matters for daily life and part-time work in Japan — many of our past students kept training with Japanese Ninjas through this stage specifically to stay ahead academically once classes start.
