Talking about the weather in Japanese is one of the easiest ways to start a real conversation. In Japan, a simple line like "Kyō wa samui desu ne" (It's cold today, isn't it?) opens chats with neighbours, colleagues and shopkeepers. In this guide you will learn beginner-friendly Japanese weather words, how to say cold, hot and rain, and short sentences you can use from day one. If you want to learn Japanese online in India, this is a quick, useful topic to add to your JLPT N5 vocabulary practice.
Why Japanese People Talk About the Weather
Weather talk in Japan works a bit like "Aaj bahut garmi hai na?" in India. It is polite, safe and friendly. Nobody expects a long answer. Usually one person comments and the other agrees. Learning this pattern lets you sound natural even with very little Japanese.
Basic Japanese Weather Words (JLPT N5 Vocabulary)
These are typical beginner-level words that you will meet early in most N5 courses.

Time words you will need

Samui Meaning: How to Say Cold in Japanese
Samui (寒い) means cold, but only for the air or the weather, the feeling you get on a Delhi winter morning. For something cold to touch, like water or a drink, Japanese uses a different word: 冷たい (tsumetai).
- Kyō wa samui desu ne.: It's cold today, isn't it?
- Mizu ga tsumetai desu.: The water is cold.
The same idea applies to hot. Atsui (暑い) is hot weather, while hot tea or food is also pronounced atsui but written with a different kanji (熱い). When you speak, context makes it clear.
How to Say Rain in Japanese
Rain is 雨 (ame). To say "it is raining", Japanese uses the verb furu (to fall):
- Ame ga futte imasu.: It is raining.
- Yuki ga futte imasu.: It is snowing.
- Ashita wa ame deshō.: It will probably rain tomorrow.
Tip: ame can also mean candy (飴). The pitch is different, but in daily talk the situation tells you which one is meant. Nobody will think you are talking about sweets when you look at the sky! 😄
10 Easy Weather Sentences for Small Talk
- Ii tenki desu ne.: Nice weather, isn't it?
- Kyō wa samui desu ne.: It's cold today, isn't it?
- Kyō wa atsui desu ne.: It's hot today, isn't it?
- Suzushii desu ne.: It's nice and cool, isn't it?
- Kinō wa atsukatta desu.: Yesterday was hot.
- Kyō wa samukunai desu.: It isn't cold today.
- Kaze ga tsuyoi desu ne.: The wind is strong, isn't it?
- Ame ga futte imasu.: It's raining.
- Kasa ga arimasu ka?: Do you have an umbrella?
- Sō desu ne.: Yes, it is. (the perfect reply)
The magic of "ne"
The little word ne at the end works like the Hindi "na" in "Thand hai na?". It invites the other person to agree. That is why weather sentences almost always end with ne, and the most natural reply is "Sō desu ne".
Past and negative forms (a small grammar win)
Words like samui and atsui are i-adjectives. Change the ending -i to:
- -katta for past: samui → samukatta (was cold)
- -kunai for negative: atsui → atsukunai (not hot)
Watch out: ii (good) is special. Its past form is yokatta, not "iikatta".
Practical Tips to Remember These Words
- Look outside every morning and say one sentence in Japanese: "Kyō wa hare desu" or "Kyō wa kumori desu".
- Link words to Indian seasons: Delhi winter = samui, May afternoons = atsui, monsoon = ame.
- Change your phone's weather app language to Japanese for a week and read the icons and words.
- Practise with a partner using the comment-and-agree pattern: one says "Atsui desu ne", the other says "Sō desu ne".
- Learn kana first so you can read 寒い as さむい. It makes vocabulary stick faster.
