Learn Japanese Online for a Career: Jobs in India & Japan
Wondering if Japanese can really build your career? Here is an honest guide to Japanese-language jobs in India and Japan, the JLPT levels employers ask for, and how to start. 🎌
Many students who learn Japanese online start for fun, through anime, travel or curiosity. Then a bigger question comes up: can Japanese actually give me a career? The honest answer is yes, it can open real doors, both here in India and if you want to work in Japan from India. But it takes the right level, steady practice and realistic expectations. This guide covers where Japanese speakers work, which JLPT levels employers usually ask for, and a simple step-by-step plan.
Why Japanese Is a Useful Career Skill for Indians
Japanese is not as common as English or French in India, so learners who reach a strong level stand out. Companies with Japan-facing teams need people who can read emails, join client calls and translate documents. Some also want people who understand keigo (敬語, polite business language).
A few words you will hear again and again in a Japanese career:
- 仕事 (shigoto): work, job
- 会社 (kaisha): company
- 面接 (mensetsu): job interview
- 履歴書 (rirekisho): résumé / CV
- 翻訳 (hon'yaku): translation
- 通訳 (tsūyaku): interpretation
- よろしくお願いします (yoroshiku onegai shimasu): a polite phrase used when you meet someone or ask a favour
Japanese Language Jobs in India
You do not have to move abroad to use Japanese at work. We have found evidence of Japan-facing teams at several large companies in India:
- Cognizant: job postings for "Japanese Speaker" roles
- Accenture: a Japanese hiring programme at campuses, with N3 to N1 desired
- TCS: a Japan Delivery Center in Pune and a Japanese language academy
- Wipro: Wipro Japan, with a language programme before deployment
- HCLTech: HCL Japan
Openings change all the time, so always check current openings on each company's careers page. Common roles include translator, interpreter, and Japanese-speaking IT or client-support positions.
What about salary?
Payscale lists an average of about Rs 5.4 LPA for a Japanese translator in India, with entry level around Rs 4 LPA. Please treat this as an estimate, not a promise. Pay depends on your level, your other skills, the city and the company.
How to Work in Japan from India: The Main Routes
If your dream is to live in Japan, these are the main visa routes. Rules change, so always confirm on official sites.
- Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services: the standard employment visa for IT, engineering and translation roles. You need a job offer, usually a relevant degree or experience, and an employer-sponsored Certificate of Eligibility (COE).
- Highly Skilled Professional: a points system (70 points needed). JLPT N1 adds 15 points and N2 adds 10.
- SSW visa Japan (Specified Skilled Worker i): needs JLPT N4 or JFT-Basic A2, plus a skills test for your field. There are 19 fields after January 2026.
For job hunting, popular portals include GaijinPot Jobs, Daijob, CareerCross, Wantedly, Japan Dev (tech) and Indeed Japan. Most Japan roles ask for N2 or N3 and above.
Which JLPT Level Should You Aim For?
- N5 and N4: your foundation. N4 (or JFT-Basic A2) is the language requirement for SSW (i).
- N3: the level where many company roles start to become realistic. Accenture's programme, for example, desires N3 to N1.
- N2 and N1: what most professional roles in Japan ask for, and they add points under the Highly Skilled Professional system.
Good news: the JLPT certificate does not expire, though some employers set their own limit on how old it can be.
A Practical Career Plan, Step by Step
- Start with N5 properly. Learn hiragana, katakana and basic grammar with live practice, not just apps.
- Move to N4, then N3. Build vocabulary every day and practise listening with real audio.
- Learn polite Japanese early. Practise self-introductions like Watashi wa Priya to mōshimasu ("My name is Priya," in humble form).
- Practise typing in Japanese. Workplace communication happens on email and chat, so get comfortable with a Japanese keyboard input.
- Take mock tests. The JLPT has no speaking section, so practise speaking separately too. Interviews will test it!
- Combine Japanese with another skill. IT, engineering, accounting or customer support plus Japanese is a strong mix.
FAQ: Japanese Careers for Indians
Can I get a job with only JLPT N5?
N5 is a great start, but most roles ask for higher levels. SSW (i) needs N4 or JFT-Basic A2, and most Japan roles ask for N3 or N2 and above.
Do I need a degree to work in Japan?
The standard employment visa usually needs a relevant degree or experience. SSW (i) instead needs a Japanese test and a skills test for the field.
Will learning Japanese guarantee me a job or visa?
No, and nobody honest can promise that. Japanese is a strong skill that improves your chances. Hiring and visas depend on employers and immigration authorities.
Does Japanese Ninjas help with careers?
Yes. Our courses include career counselling and placement assistance, along with live classes, study books, tests, doubt support and JLPT/NAT/JFT mock tests. We guide you, but we do not promise a job.
