SSW Visa Japan: Japanese Level Indians Need (N4 or JFT A2)

by Atishaya Jain · 2026-10-26

Want to work in Japan from India? Here is a simple guide to the SSW (i) visa and the Japanese level it asks for: JLPT N4 or JFT-Basic A2. 🇯🇵

Many people in India ask us the same question: "Can I work in Japan without being fluent in Japanese?" One route people often hear about is the SSW visa Japan offers, the Specified Skilled Worker visa. If you want to work in Japan from India, it helps to know what this visa asks for in Japanese, and how to start preparing. This guide keeps it simple and honest. Rules change, so always confirm the latest details on official sites.

What is the SSW (i) visa?

SSW stands for Specified Skilled Worker. The first tier, SSW (i), is for people who work in specific fields where Japan needs workers. After January 2026, there are 19 fields. To qualify, you generally need two things:

  • A Japanese language test result: JLPT N4 or JFT-Basic at the A2 level.
  • A skills test for your chosen field. Each field has its own test, so check the details for the field you want.

The higher tier, SSW (ii), has different rules. We will not guess about it here. Please check official sources.

Important: no course, institute or agent can promise you a job or a visa. What you can control is your Japanese level and your preparation.

Two ways to show your Japanese level

Option 1: JLPT N4

  • The JLPT is held twice a year in India: the first Sunday of July and the first Sunday of December. In 2026 the dates are 5 July and 6 December. The July 2027 date is still to be confirmed.
  • N4 has three sections: language knowledge (vocabulary and grammar), reading, and listening. There is no speaking or writing section.
  • The score is out of 180. For N4 the overall pass mark is 90, and you must also reach the minimum score in each section.
  • Results come about 2 months after the test, and the certificate does not expire.

Register early, because seats go fast. Registration is handled by each city's host institution. Check jlpt.jp for the official details.

Option 2: JFT-Basic (A2)

  • It is computer-based and takes 60 minutes. It tests everyday Japanese.
  • The score range is 10 to 250. A score of 200 or above is the A2 level.
  • It is held many times a year, and you get your result immediately.
  • Results do not expire.

If you want a faster, more frequent exam, JFT-Basic can suit you. If you want a certificate with a long-term reputation, the JLPT is a good choice. Some people take both.

How to prepare for N4 (step by step)

Strong JLPT N4 preparation sits on top of N5 basics. If you are starting from zero, begin with a Japanese language course for beginners and build up. A simple path:

  1. Be comfortable with hiragana and katakana. You will read them in every question.
  2. Learn daily-life verbs in the polite form. For example: hatarakimasu (働きます, to work), tabemasu (食べます, to eat), yasumimasu (休みます, to rest or take a day off).
  3. Learn the te-form. It unlocks many useful patterns, like tabete kudasai (食べてください, please eat).
  4. Practise workplace words: shigoto (仕事, work), kaisha (会社, company), shiken (試験, exam), onegai shimasu (お願いします, please / I request).
  5. Practise listening every day. Even 15 minutes of short clips or audio helps, because listening is a full section on the JLPT.
  6. Take mock tests under time limits, then review your mistakes carefully.

A simple weekly plan

  • 3 days: new grammar and vocabulary (about 45 minutes).
  • 2 days: reading and listening practice.
  • 1 day: a mock test section or revision.
  • 1 day: rest or light review. Yasumu no mo renshuu desu! (Resting is also practice!)

Why Japanese helps beyond the visa

If you later look at roles in Japan, most openings ask for N2 or N3 and above, so N4 is a strong first step, not the end of the road. Also, from 1 April 2027, the Technical Intern Training system is replaced by the "Employment for Skill Development" system. JFT-Basic now reports A1 and A2.1 as well, and these are accepted for that new system from April 2027. Rules like these are changing, so verify before you plan.

FAQ: SSW visa and Japanese

Is JLPT N5 enough for the SSW (i) visa?

The Japanese requirement for SSW (i) is JLPT N4 or JFT-Basic A2, so N5 alone does not meet it. N5 is still a great first step toward N4.

Should I take JLPT N4 or JFT-Basic?

Both can show your level. JFT-Basic is held many times a year with instant results. JLPT is held twice a year, with results after about 2 months. Pick the one that fits your timeline, or ask your trainer.

Do I also need a skills test?

Yes, SSW (i) also needs a skills test for your field. Check the official details for the field you are interested in.

Can you guarantee a job or visa?

No. Nobody honestly can. We help you build your Japanese and your exam readiness. Always check the Immigration Services Agency and the Embassy of Japan in India for current rules.

Where do I look for jobs?

Some job portals are GaijinPot Jobs, Daijob, CareerCross, Wantedly, Japan Dev and Indeed Japan. Always check current openings and be careful with anyone asking for money to "guarantee" a job.
