Learn Japanese Online: A Hiragana & Katakana Plan
Want to read your first Japanese words? Here is a simple 14-day hiragana and katakana plan made for Indian beginners. ✍️
If you want to learn Japanese online, start with the two Japanese alphabets: hiragana and katakana. Together they are called kana, and every textbook, JLPT paper and Japanese sign uses them. The good news? With a small daily routine, kana is very doable. This guide gives you a simple 14-day plan, real word examples and the mistakes Indian beginners make most. If you are choosing a Japanese language course for beginners, it will also show you what a good first week should look like.
Why Kana Comes Before Everything Else
Japanese uses three scripts:
- Hiragana: 46 basic characters for native Japanese words and grammar endings.
- Katakana: 46 basic characters for foreign loanwords, names and some brand words.
- Kanji: characters taken from Chinese that carry meaning. You learn these step by step.
JLPT N5 questions are written in kana with some basic kanji. Learning kana early means you stop depending on romaji (English letters) and start reading real Japanese from the first month.
Good news for Hindi speakers
Each kana stands for one sound unit, such as ka, ki or ku. That is close to how many of us already think about sounds in Hindi. The five Japanese vowels a, i, u, e, o (あいうえお) are short and clear, and most Indian learners say them naturally. Bahut accha start! 😊
A 14-Day Hiragana and Katakana Plan
Spend 30–45 minutes a day. Read each character aloud, write it by hand and test yourself before moving on.
- Days 1–2: the あ, か and さ rows (a, ka, sa). Practise words like あい ai (love) and さけ sake (salmon / rice wine).
- Days 3–4: the た, な and は rows. Read ねこ neko (cat) and いぬ inu (dog).
- Days 5–6: the ま, や, ら and わ rows, plus ん (n). Read さくら sakura (cherry blossom) and すし sushi.
- Day 7: review day. Read all 46 characters in random order and write ten words from memory.
- Days 8–9: voiced sounds. Two small marks (゛) turn か into が (ga), さ into ざ (za), た into だ (da) and は into ば (ba). A small circle (゜) turns は into ぱ (pa).
- Day 10: combinations and special rules. きゃ kya, しゅ shu, ちょ cho. A small っ doubles the next consonant: がっこう gakkō (school), きって kitte (stamp). Long vowels change meaning: おかあさん okāsan (mother).
- Days 11–14: start katakana using words you already know: カレー karē (curry), コーヒー kōhī (coffee), テレビ terebi (TV), インド Indo (India), パン pan (bread).
Katakana usually feels quicker because the sounds are the same as hiragana. Keep revising both after Day 14. Speed comes with daily reading.
Practical Tips That Actually Work
1. Learn sounds, not pictures
Always say the sound aloud while writing. Your ear and hand learn together, which helps a lot later in the JLPT listening section.
2. Read real words from Day 2
Do not wait until you know all 46. Reading ねこ or すし early gives you small wins and keeps you motivated.
3. Watch the look-alike pairs
- Hiragana: さ (sa) and ち (chi), ぬ (nu) and め (me), ね (ne), れ (re) and わ (wa), る (ru) and ろ (ro).
- Katakana: シ (shi) and ツ (tsu), ソ (so) and ン (n). Notice the stroke direction.
4. Write by hand, review on your phone
Handwriting builds memory. Flashcard apps are great for quick revision on the metro or during a break.
5. Know the small reading rules
In こんにちは konnichiwa (hello), the last は is read wa because it works as a particle. You will meet a few rules like this. A teacher can explain them in two minutes, which saves weeks of confusion.
Common Mistakes Indian Beginners Make
- Staying on romaji too long. It feels easy at first, but it slows your reading later.
- Skipping katakana. Menus, product names and many everyday words are in katakana.
- Ignoring long vowels and small っ. They change meaning, so read slowly at first.
- Learning alone with no feedback. Small pronunciation habits stick if nobody corrects them early.
FAQ: Learning Kana for Beginners
Should I learn hiragana and katakana together?
Most learners find it easier to finish hiragana first, then learn katakana. The sounds are the same, so the second script feels faster.
How long does it take to learn kana?
It depends on how regularly you practise. The plan above spreads the basics over 14 days, but daily revision afterwards matters more than speed.
Do I need kanji for JLPT N5?
Yes, a small set of basic kanji appears at N5. Learn kana first, then add kanji step by step. For exact exam details, check the official site, jlpt.jp.
Can I really learn Japanese online?
Yes. Live online classes give you a teacher's corrections, regular tests and doubt support from home, wherever you are in India.
Is romaji useful at all?
It helps in your first few days to check sounds. After that, try to read kana directly.
