JLPT N2: Upper-intermediate Japanese
JLPT N2 is the upper-intermediate level of the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test. This guide explains what it covers, what you will be able to do, how long it usually takes and how to prepare — written for learners in India.
What can you do at JLPT N2?
At N2 you can:
- read articles, essays and business emails
- follow conversations, news and lectures in natural speech
- discuss work topics and give reasoned opinions
- use formal keigo in common business situations
What do you need to know for N2?
The JLPT no longer publishes official word and kanji lists, but commonly cited estimates for N2 are about 1,000 kanji and about 6,000 words, plus the grammar patterns that go with them. The test checks language knowledge (vocabulary and grammar), reading and listening — there is no speaking or writing section, so a good course also trains you to speak and write, which is what employers actually test.
How long does N2 take?
Our live online N2 course runs about 6–10 months. Your pace depends on how many hours you can practise each week and what you already know — the free demo class helps our counsellor suggest the right starting level for you.
How to prepare for N2
- Learn in a fixed order: sounds and scripts first, then grammar patterns, then vocabulary in sentences.
- Practise a little every day instead of a lot once a week.
- Speak out loud from day one — even to yourself.
- Take full mock tests under exam timing, then review every mistake.
- Listen to Japanese daily: slow news, podcasts, anime with Japanese subtitles.
Who is the N2 course for?
It suits professionals and graduates aiming at jobs with Japanese companies. Classes are live and online, so you can join from anywhere in India.
