JLPT vs NAT vs JFT-Basic: Which Japanese Exam to Take?

by Atishaya Jain · 2026-10-16

Confused between JLPT, NAT-TEST and JFT-Basic? Here is a simple guide to what each exam is, who it suits, and how to choose. 🥷

Many learners in India start Japanese and quickly hear three exam names: JLPT, NAT-TEST and JFT-Basic. They sound similar, but they are built for different goals. This guide explains each one in simple words so you can choose with confidence. Chinta mat kijiye, it is easier than it looks!

Quick Comparison

  • JLPT: the best-known test, with levels N5 (beginner) to N1 (advanced).
  • NAT-TEST: five levels (5Q to 1Q) that roughly match N5 to N1, held several times a year in India.
  • JFT-Basic: a computer-based test of everyday Japanese, mainly linked to certain work and study routes.

JLPT: The Level-Based Classic

How it works

The JLPT tests language knowledge (vocabulary and grammar), reading and listening. There is no speaking or writing section. Each level is scored out of 180. To pass, you need the overall pass mark and the minimum score in every section.

  • N1: 100
  • N2: 90
  • N3: 95
  • N4: 90
  • N5: 80

Dates and results

In India the JLPT is held twice a year, on the first Sunday of July and the first Sunday of December. In 2026 the dates are 5 July and 6 December. The next one is July 2027, with the date still to be confirmed. Registration is handled by each city's host institution (for example New Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru), and seats go fast, so check jlpt.jp early. Results come about 2 months after the test. The certificate does not expire, though some employers or schools set their own age limit on it.

Who it suits

The JLPT suits you if you want a long-term, widely recognised proof of your level. It is also useful for careers: most Japan-related roles ask for N2 or N3 and above. For the Highly Skilled Professional points system, N1 adds 15 points and N2 adds 10.

NAT-TEST: More Chances in a Year

The NAT-TEST has five levels, 5Q to 1Q, which roughly match N5 to N1. It is held several times a year in India, so it can help if you do not want to wait for the next JLPT. Dates change, so always check nat-test.com. It also works well as practice: sitting a real exam shows how you handle time and pressure.

JFT-Basic: Everyday Japanese, Fast Results

JFT-Basic is run by the Japan Foundation. It is computer-based, takes 60 minutes, and tests the Japanese you need in daily life. Scores run from 10 to 250:

  • 200+ = A2
  • 175-199 = A2.1
  • 145-174 = A1

It is held many times a year, results are shown immediately, and they do not expire. This is why it is popular with people on practical routes:

  • SSW (i): needs JLPT N4 or JFT-Basic A2, plus a skills test for your field.
  • Study visa (language school): Japan asks for A1-level Japanese, which can be shown by JLPT N5, JFT-Basic or another approved test. Check with your school.
  • New rules: from August 2026 JFT-Basic also reports A1 and A2.1. These are accepted for the new Employment for Skill Development system from April 2027 and for student-status language-school entry.

Rules change, so always confirm with the official site or your school before booking.

How to Choose

  1. Want to study in a language school in Japan? Ask your school which test it accepts. N5 or JFT-Basic can show A1.
  2. Aiming for SSW (i)? Look at JLPT N4 or JFT-Basic A2, plus the skills test for your field.
  3. Planning a Japan-facing career in India or Japan? The JLPT, especially N3, N2 or N1, is usually the stronger long-term goal. Check current openings with companies such as Cognizant, Accenture, TCS, Wipro or HCLTech.
  4. Not sure yet? Start with N5 preparation. It builds the base for every test above.

Study Tips That Work for All Three Exams

  • Learn hiragana and katakana first. Example: しけん (shiken) means exam, and ごうかく (gōkaku) means pass.
  • Practise listening daily. Even 15 minutes helps. Try おはようございます (ohayō gozaimasu), good morning, aloud.
  • Take mock tests. They show your weak sections early.
  • Revise grammar in short bursts instead of cramming before the exam.

FAQs

Can I take JFT-Basic and JLPT both?

Yes. They are separate tests, and many learners take both depending on their goal.

Is there a speaking test in the JLPT?

No. The JLPT tests vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening only. Still, speaking practice helps you learn faster.

Does the JLPT certificate expire?

No, it does not expire, but some employers or schools may set their own age limit.

Will passing an exam guarantee a job or visa?

No. A test result is one important step, but it never guarantees a job or a visa. Check official rules and current openings.
